Cheek fat removal with CoolMini at Halley Medical Aesthetics

I have been wanting to get rid of my jowl fat for the longest time. I have tried out make-up techniques such as contouring, several face exercises that are found online, and using Photoshop to contour my face. But those are just a temporary solution which is not suitable for lazy people. I even considered going under the knife to make my face slimmer which is an unacceptable procedure for most people. It is also expensive and comes with risks.

Exercising and dieting help make our body look slimmer and lose weight. However, I realized that losing weight and fat loss are different. When we gain weight or lose weight, our fat cells just expand or contract. But the amount of fat cells we have in our body remain the same. Therefore, when we think we have lost the fat in our body, it is just the shrinking of our fat cells which makes us appear slimmer. The fat cells, however, are still in our body.

What I learned about CoolSculpting

Not long later, I discovered this treatment offered at Halley Medical Aesthetics called CoolSculpting, that addresses this problem. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive, no downtime fat reduction treatment. It’s the only US FDA-approved fat freezing treatment, that uses the concept of cryolipolysis to freeze and destroy unwanted fat cells which will be disposed from the body naturally. The treatment removes 20-25% of fat cells in the treated area each time. And because our body is unable to produce any new fat cells after five years of age, the fat cells that die after fat freezing will be gone forever.

CoolSculpting is used to remove unwanted fat in the stubborn areas, which cannot be removed through spot toning exercises. It is used for body contouring, to make our body shapelier! There is a huge variety of applicators in the CoolSculpting family which can be used to treat different body parts, ranging from love handles, back or bra fat, abdomen, to inner and outer thighs. The CoolMini applicator is one of them, and it is designed to treat pockets of fat in smaller body areas like the chin, armpit, and knee.

At Halley Medical Aesthetics, they are able to offer patients the effectiveness of fat removal using CoolSculpting with the efficiency of DualSculpting and the CoolAdvantage technology. DualSculpting is the use of two CoolSculpting machines at the same time to reduce treatment time by half. Combined with the CoolAdvantage family of applicators which reduces treatment time by 50%, patients will be able to treat more problematic areas in a shorter period of time. The CoolAdvantage applicator also features an enhanced cup design for improved patient comfort as well as a larger cooling area to treat a bigger area.

Why the CoolMini for my cheeks

On August 2018, I decided to visit Halley Medical Aesthetics to consult Dr. Terence Tan's on my problem area which is my chubby face and acne skin.

After accessing my condition, I was so happy when Dr. Terence Tan concluded that I am suitable to do CoolSculpting on my jowl with the CoolMini.

He explained that although the CoolMini is usually used for the chin, armpit, and knee area, the unique shape of the applicator is small enough to treat unwanted fat in the cheeks. But a doctor's expertise is still required for the accurate placement and treatment of fat especially in the cheeks to ensure good and symmetrical result. And with no hesitation, I agreed to go ahead with the treatment.

My treatment process

Before the treatment, Dr. Terence Tan used the CoolMini template to mark the areas that require treatment.

Dr. Terence Tan and I had a quick discussion after drawing. He asked me to check that I am all good with the area that is going to be treated. I can tell that Dr. Terence Tan is very experienced, and he explained everything very clearly to me, which put me at ease.

So yup, if you are very precise about what is going to be done to your face then this is your chance to discuss with your doctor.

The clinic assistant then applied cooling gel onto the treatment area to protect the skin during treatment.

During consultation, I told Dr. Terence Tan about the asymmetry of my jowls. I didn’t like the fact that my right cheek looked bigger than my left. So he customised my treatment further by prescribing a 28 mins treatment on my right cheek and 25 mins on the left.

When treatment started, I felt the applicator drawing in my cheek fat before the cooling set in. After treatment, I also had a chance to touch my own face at the treated area. It was super cold and I can really feel it freezing from the inside of my mouth.

  After each treatment cycle, the clinic assistant will massage the treated area. This is to help break down the crystallized dead fat cells, which will be passed out by the body.

During the process, CoolMini is secured with an elastic band to ensure it doesn't move during treatment. Haha, I know I look unglamorous here but hey, if I can be ugly for a moment and look good for life, then why not.

Results are expected in three months' time. Best thing is that I am still looking the same as before treatment because there's no downtime and no one can actually tell that I did something to my face. I actually went for a photo shoot and I was rocking it! ✌
