Improving Gut Health In 3 Simple Ways

Admit it, the first place you go to when any problem arises is non-other than anyone but Google. Then we seek 2nd opinions such as bits of advice from family, friends, and professionals.

One fine day I self-diagnosed myself as having unhealthy gut health, because of the following problems:

1. Irregular Bowel Movement

I have been facing bloating and constipation problem for the longest time ever. Can you believe I only eliminate waste once per week?! A balanced gut will have less difficulty processing food and eliminating waste.

2. Constant fatigue

An unhealthy gut may contribute to sleep disturbances such as insomnia or poor sleep, and therefore lead to chronic fatigue. So gut damage can also impair our ability to sleep well
The constant fatigue feeling I had is totally no joke, I can literally doze off any time of the day. During the night I am unable to sleep, and at times I will take supplements that can improve my rate of falling asleep.

Gut Health Is Important

Deep in our gut, 40 trillion chemists are hard at work helping you digest your meals, making essential nutrients you can’t produce on your own, protecting you from disease, and even shaping which parts of your DNA manifest and which remain dormant.

They are fungi, bacteria, and other single-celled organisms. When it comes to the bacteria in your gut, every time you eat, you are feeding a chemist. Unfortunately, most of the times we are feeding the bad guy, and starving the good.

The bacteria in your gut affect nearly every part of your body; research has associated a lack of good bacteria in the gut with many health problems:

3 Simple Things I Do For A Better Gut Health

I have decided to make a change in my lifestyle because prevention is always better than cure, especially when the average lifespan now is on the increasing side.

1. Getting Enough Sleep

Not getting enough or sufficient quality of sleep can have serious impacts on your gut health, which can, in turn, contribute to more sleep issues. I try to prioritize getting at least 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night because lifestyle factors can kill your body’s good bacteria.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the mucosal lining of the intestines, as well as on the balance of good bacteria in the gut. Staying hydrated is a simple way to promote a healthy gut.

For myself, I always try to stay away from sweet drinks because sugars can decrease the number of good bacteria in our gut and can cause other diseases, even cancer. Drinking less alcohol helps too!

3. Taking Probiotic

Adding a probiotic supplement to your diet may be a great way to improve gut health because they are live beneficial bacteria and can enhance the health of your digestive tract, colonise and restore the good bacteria count in your gut to suppress the ‘trouble-making’ bad bacteria, support absorption of nutrients while eliminate toxic compounds from the digestive tract.

Things to take note when choosing the right product:
  • CFUs (Colony-forming units) - This is the total count of all the bacteria in the probiotic. There’s a huge range, with brands offering anywhere from 1 billion to 100 billion CFUs per dose. The bigger the number, the more beneficial bacteria you get.
  • Strains - The total number of different types of bacteria in each probiotic varies greatly. A broad spectrum of different kinds is likely to give you the best odds of success.
  • Expiration date - Some probiotic supplements get so old that the bacteria are literally dead by the time they reach the consumer. Check expiration dates! The one I've gotten is a 1 month supply and can be kept for more than 2 years, I would have finished it before it expires.

Warning: People with bacterial overgrowths, such as SIBO, should not take probiotics.

14 Days Of Developing New Habits

Remember doing an effective Gut Detox a few years back, I decided to try a similar product from the same website. Because of them having an extensive range of probiotics, therefore I am unsure which is most suitable for my current situation. Hence, I contacted Lifestream Group sharing with them my concerns and got them to recommend the right product for me.

FloraGenesis, an ultra-strong probiotic with 50 billion (15 strains) probiotics was the chosen one:

After 2 weeks of changing my lifestyle, I felt better in general. Especially when I went for my Zumba class, I realize I had more energy to dance compared to usual days where I would want to stop halfway during class. And currently, I actually eliminate waste twice per week which is a good improvement within a month. I also love how compact the packaging is, where I can carry it in my daily bag.

BONUS TIPS!! Probiotic Bacteria had the highest rates of survival when provided within 30 minutes before or simultaneously with a meal or beverage that contained some fat.
