How I Lost My 10,000-Follower Instagram Account
For years, Instagram @serenekoh.sg was the heart of my content creation journey.
It was where I shared restaurant discoveries, family travels, beauty treatments, home projects, and snippets of everyday life as a mum. More importantly, it became the place where brands discovered me and where many of my collaborations began.
Then one day, everything changed.
My Facebook account was suspended, and because it was linked to my Instagram account through Meta, my Instagram account was disabled too.
Years of content, over 10,000 followers, conversations with brands, and memories suddenly became inaccessible.
Like many creators, I never imagined it would happen to me.
A Reminder That We Don’t Own Social Media
This experience taught me one important lesson:
We don’t actually own our social media accounts.
No matter how many followers you’ve built, your account ultimately belongs to the platform.
Algorithms change.
Policies change.
Accounts can be hacked.
Sometimes mistakes happen.
As creators, we spend years building communities on platforms we don’t control.
That’s a scary thought.
My Content Creation Journey Doesn’t End Here
Although losing access to Instagram was upsetting, it also gave me an opportunity to rethink my long-term strategy.
Instead of depending on one platform, I’m focusing on building assets that I actually own.
These include:
- My blog
- My YouTube channel
- Search engine traffic
- My email newsletter (coming soon)
Unlike social media posts that disappear after a few days, evergreen content can continue helping readers and attracting brands for years.
Why I’m Investing More in YouTube
One platform I’m especially excited to grow is YouTube.
Unlike short-form content that often has a short lifespan, YouTube videos can continue appearing in search results months or even years later.
I’ll be sharing:
- Singapore food recommendations
- Family-friendly travel itineraries
- Honest beauty treatment reviews
- Parenting experiences
- Lifestyle content
- Behind-the-scenes of being a content creator
My goal isn’t simply to chase views, it’s to create videos that genuinely help people make informed decisions.
Why I’m Continuing to Blog
I’ve always enjoyed writing.
Blogging allows me to go into much greater detail than a short Instagram caption ever could.
I’ll continue publishing articles about:
- Restaurant reviews
- Travel itineraries
- Product reviews
- Parenting experiences
- Beauty treatments
- Home inspiration
- Content creation tips
Every article is written with readers in mind while also being optimised for Google Search, so people can continue finding useful information long after it’s published.
To Future Brand Partners
If you’re reading this because you’re considering a collaboration, thank you for stopping by.
Although my Instagram account is currently unavailable, I’m still actively creating content and working with brands.
I offer:
- SEO blog articles
- YouTube videos
- User-generated content (UGC)
- Product photography
- Restaurant and hotel reviews
- Family lifestyle content
My focus has always been on creating authentic content that provides value to both audiences and businesses.
Looking Ahead
While I hope to regain access to my social media accounts, I’m choosing not to let this setback define my journey.
Sometimes losing something familiar pushes us to build something even stronger.
This blog is one step in that direction.
Thank you for following my journey, whether you’ve been here since the beginning or have just discovered my content through Google.
Here’s to new beginnings.
